Rijkswaterstaat, is the executive organisation of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Rijkswaterstaat works on a daily basis to make the Netherlands safe, accessible and liveabel, and is responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands. This includes the main road network, the main waterway network and watersystems.
Rijkswaterstaat faces the challenge of integrating infrastructure into the living environment. A sustainable living environment in which the economy, ecology, quality of life and social relations are in balance – that is Rijkswaterstaat’s ambition for the Netherlands. We seek to achieve it through a wide range of sustainability measures, with innovative solutions and in close partnership with many stakeholders.
Together with the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management and ProRail, Rijkswaterstaat works on the multi-annual national Programme for Defragmentation, MJPO, to ensure the defragmenting of nature along existing infrastructure by installing structures such as ecoducts, ecoculverts, wildlife tunnels and banks that are easily passable for wildlife.
